MetroWest Chamber of Commerce Education Initiative
Business Internship Registration Information
The Education Initiative of the Metro West Chamber of Commerce and the Metro South/West Regional Employment Board seek to partner with employers to provide internship opportunities for students from five local high schools. To augment a young adult’s education and to meet the needs of the 21st Century workplace, we encourage you to get involved. Internships benefit both businesses and their employees.
What is an internship (paid or unpaid) and what is the structure of it?
Internships are time-limited work experiences with defined goals that take place in a business setting of any type. Some examples are:
- An internship in accounting may focus on understanding accounts payable and receivable, purchase orders and other basic accounting functions; the work schedule for this placement may be executed on a part-time basis over the course of several weeks or on a full-time basis in the summer months.
- An internship in the field of nursing/medicine may be based in a hospital or other healthcare facility. An intern may rotate through several departments shadowing clinicians in ophthalmology, cardiology, nutrition, physical therapy and a host of other disciplines. The medical environment may require morning shifts in order to afford an intern the maximum exposure without any disruption to clinician and other support personnel schedules.
- Architectural interns may learn CAD or other computer specific design programs that are typically used by architects and engineers. Interns may also be introduced a host of licensure requirements including environmental compliance, historical commission guidelines and city planning regulations that all factor in to the execution of a project
The specific dates and hours for an internship are determined in a mutually agreed upon contract between the intern and the employer.
If your business can provide one or more internships in any career field, or if you would like to learn more about this Initiative in your local area, please return the attached form via email to: c_herman@comcast.net or fax to Janet Richardi at 508-875-1103.
We thank you in advance for your support of the young adults in our community.
